The following web based tools (web clients) have been made available for demonstration purposes. Although the tools should work on most web browsers, these are designed to be used optimally with Firefox which can be freely downloaded here.
eHabitat 1: Ecological forecasting under climate change
Purpose: using three variables (annual rainfall, bioTemperature and evapotranspiration), this web based tool is designed to characterise current and forecasted (2020, 2050, 2080) climatic conditions over an area selected by the end-user (a hand drawn polygon or an existing protected area) . eHabitat can also model uncertainties.
Functions & parameters: End-users can select among various climate change models (HADCM3, CCMA) and scenarios (A2a, B2a), modelling functions (Mahalanobis distances, MaxEnt, BioClim, Domain) and spatial resolutions of the outputs (30 sec, 2.5, 5 and 10 min). Uncertainties of the results can be simulated
Data: The current and forecasted climate data are derived from WorldClim, a high resolution climatic grid.
Outputs: Maps (GeoTiff) of probabilities and associated uncertainties to find climate conditions simililar to a reference area.
Limitations: the resolution of the results is limited to 2.5 min.

Functions & parameters: End-users can select any African bird species and among various climate change models (HADCM3, CCMA) and scenarios (A2a, B2a), and spatial resolutions of the outputs (30 sec, 2.5, 5 and 10 min). The ecological niche models are produced with Mahalanobis distances.
Data: The current and forecasted climate data are derived from WorldClim, a high resolution climatic grid. Bird distribution maps are provided by Birdlife International. Occurences of bird observations are obtained from GBIF. Outputs: Maps (GeoTiff) of probabilities and associated uncertainties to find climate conditions simililar to a reference area defined by a bird distribution map or bird occurences.
Limitations: the resolution of the results is limited to 2.5 min. Bird species can be queried only over Africa. Uncertainty modelling is implemented in eHabitat 1 only.
